Discussion on Featured Book: Leading With Dignity: How to Create a Culture That Brings Out the Best in People by Donna Hicks, Ph.D

As facilitators and learning and development professionals we spend a great deal of time and effort helping & supporting leaders, managers, teams, and individuals to build organizations and relationships that are respectful, empathetic and trustful. Dr. Hicks’ book on Leading with Dignity is a straightforward approach to bring the concept of honoring dignity into our practice as facilitators and into our work with leaders and organizations.  Over the course of the two sessions there will be prereading and thinking questions for our conversations about the impact of having a facilitation practice built on dignity and how best to educate and support leaders of organizations to build a culture based on dignity.

Please note that this is for MAFN members only and there is limited space, so please register early. The two sessions will build on each other, so participation in both is strongly encouraged. Be sure to register for the second session here: Conversation on Facilitation CoP: Leading with Dignity by Donna Hicks (Members Only) Part 2

    Duration: 90-minute workshop

    About the workshop:

As facilitator, you’re called on to do many things from consulting, facilitating, and training to mentoring and coaching. And while you’re very good at what you do, the daily barrage of emails, texts, tweets, and meetings distract you and stress you out. Perhaps you’ve heard the recent buzz about the docudrama The Social Dilemma or
Coded Bias and you’re wondering how to take action? You know there must be a better way to manage these tech tools that seem to be getting in your way more often than they help you and your clients focus on mission-critical activities. If this sounds familiar to you, join this fun, interactive session on how to mindfully use technology to be more present for yourself and the organizations you serve.

    Learning Objectives
    In this session, participants will:
    • Audit your personal digital wellness and determine your digital wellness score
    • Identify tech distraction triggers, and implement customized strategies to improve your digital wellness
    • Learn how to create a mindful technology plan for yourself and your team
This is a 90-minute online workshop. It will take place from 12:00pm to 1:30pm EST.

    Speaker:

Meico Marquette Whitlock helps changemakers create work-life and tech-life balance so they can do their best work better while living their best lives. He is the founder and CEO of Mindful Techie, author of the Intention Planner, and a certified mindfulness teacher. Through speaking, training, and coaching, he facilitates transformative experiences that foster wellbeing in a hyperconnected and distracted world. He’s a former triathlete, loves salsa dancing, and makes the world’s best vegan chili! Zoom seems to be the most popular platform to have online meetings and training sessions. But at times we get asked by our clients to also facilitate in other platforms, for example for security reasons.

I got such a question recently for MS Teams. To really be comfortable to facilitate or tech host a session in MS Teams, we need to have experience in a real session. Let’s create that session together. In this sessions, we will try different elements of facilitating in MS teams (making mistakes is allowed!) and get more comfortable when we need to facilitate for a client!

Please note that this is for MAFN members only and there is limited space, so please register early.

    Our guiding principles are:

    • Come open to learning (growth mindset)

    • Not expert led - will be hosted by peers with space to learn from all

    • Bring your questions, share your expertise

Duration: 3-hour workshop (includes a little networking time)

    About the workshop:

MURAL is a “digital workspace for visual collaboration.” In today’s remote environment, it has replaced the whiteboard, the flipchart and the walls of the conference room as a place where ideas are brainstormed, problems are solved and decisions are made.

In this workshop for facilitators and visual consultants, Joran Oppelt (co-author of The Visual Meetings Field Guide) will show you how he uses MURAL -- from basic best practices to advanced use cases; from template-building to clean-up.

If you are looking for someone to show you how fun and easy MURAL can be, to level-up your facilitator skills or learn how to bring the magic to your next client session, you don’t want to miss this workshop.

    Learning Objectives

    • The Difference Between Design Thinking and Visual Thinking
    • The First 30 Minutes: How to Begin Every Virtual Session
    • Using Templates vs. Working From Scratch
    • The Limitations of MURAL and What To Do if it All Goes Wrong

This is a 3-hour online workshop. It will take place from 12:00pm to 3pm EST.

    Speaker:

Joran Slane Oppelt is an international speaker, author and consultant with certifications in coaching, storytelling, design thinking and virtual facilitation.

He made his consulting debut as the Director of Creativity and Innovation at RIDG (Royal Innovation Design Group), a corporate innovation consultancy specializing in visual solutions and change management. He is a master facilitator who leads game-changing meetings for clients and has trained other facilitators to drive transformation, delivering “great reckonings in small rooms.”

Joran is a member of the International Forum of Visual Practitioners and The GLEN (Global Learning and Exchange Network) founded by David Sibbet (the father of visual thinking) and is a regular guest on MURAL’s BackStage Pass video series.

He is the co-author of The Visual Meetings Field Guide: How to Facilitate Great Meetings with Amazing Teams (with Michelle Royal) and contributing author of The Creativity Workbook for Coaches and Creatives (with Dr. Eric Maisel).

Joran has shared the stage with Ken Wilber, Otto Scharmer, Howard Rheingold, Gary Vaynerchuck, Matthew Fox and Lynne McTaggart as well as Blues Traveler, Blind Melon, Men at Work, The Fixx and more at events like South by Southwest in Austin, TX; Parliament of the World’s Religions (Salt Lake City and Toronto) and Integral European Conference in Siófok, Hungary.

Join us to discuss the history of the concept of race and how it came to be based on the podcast series Seeing White. This thought provoking podcast series provides a critical exploration into the meaning of whiteness and provides historical context on the political, social, and economic privileges that have been granted to white people. While we encourage listening to the full series, we’ll ground our discussion in Episode 2: How Race was Made  (transcript here) to focus on how the concept of race was created, what it means now,  and the implications that has for us as citizens and facilitators. The session will provide opportunities for small group discussion and learning with your peers.

Please note that this is for MAFN members only and there is limited space, so please register early.

    Our guiding principles are:

    • Come open to learning (growth mindset)

    • Not expert led- hosted by peers with space to learn from all

    • Create a brave space to focus on race

    • Share our truth and also listen to others

    • Start with ourselves = focus on the “inner work”

    • Treat others with kindness & honesty

    Duration: 90-minute workshop

    About the workshop:

When is the last time you have facilitated in-person? For many of us it has been at least a year. If you have facilitated in-person more recently, how different was it? How did you prepare the room? What pandemic precautions did you have to take or consider? Were all your participants in the room or did some participate remotely?
More and more, we are hearing our customers start to raise the idea of a “hybrid” approach to our events and workshops. If we’re being engaged for projects scheduled for the summer/fall or beyond, we’re likely being asked if we can be flexible to support either an in-person or a hybrid approach.
This workshop will be conducted in a roundtable format. We will explore these topics and more as we work together to define what it means to facilitate a “hybrid” event, identify some strategies for deciding how much virtual vs in-person vs hybrid work we want to do, and explore how to plan appropriately for the various approaches.
While there are likely more questions on these topics than clear answers, with our collective experiences and brain trust, we will at least come away with some things to consider the next time we are asked how we plan to support an in-person or hybrid event.

    Learning Objectives
    In this session, participants will:
    • Explore a variety of definitions for what “hybrid” event might mean
    • Examine our own preferences and interests for facilitating virtual, hybrid, and in-person workshops and events
    • Identify strategies for planning and preparing for in-person vs hybrid events
This is a 90-minute online workshop. It will take place from 12:00pm to 1:30pm EST.

    Speaker:

    Linda Howard
, founder of Howard Consulting LLC, helps association and nonprofit leaders who want to maintain strong relationships with their teams, members and event attendees in this virtual world we're living in. Offering online workshops, programs, and facilitated meetings and retreats, Linda helps teams better understand each other, build more effective work relationships, and achieve better results from their projects and programs.

As a Certified Virtual Facilitator, Linda has spent the last year helping nonprofit leaders, facilitators, coaches, and others take their in-person conferences, workshops and events online. She also produces all webinars and online workshops for the Mid-Atlantic Facilitators Network (www.mafn.org). Linda is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC), Project Management Professional (PMP), and Everything DiSC® and 5 Behaviors of a Cohesive Team® facilitator. She is former chapter president of the Institute of Management Consultants, National Capital Region chapter and currently serves on the leadership team.

On a personal note, Linda is absolutely in love with the outdoors and can often be found wandering in the woods, kayaking on a lazy river, or searching for a quiet place to enjoy the next sunset.

Duration: 3-hour workshop (includes a little networking time)

    About the workshop:

An organisation’s values are its greatest asset. Often values are not mobilised and remain as posters on the walls. Yet Values are so personal. If people are not feeling connected to their organisation’s values it is often because they have not been engaged in their development or in any conversation about what it looks like when those values are lived. Giving employees an opportunity to hear and tell stories of the organisations values in action, increases their impact. This helps derive value from values and close the “values mismatch gap” between espoused and practiced values.

    Learning Objectives

In this session, participants will learn:

    • How to use facilitation for values conversations in organisations
    • How to tell stories using facilitation
    • How to host stories using facilitation
