Some lessons can be learned vicariously. Most lessons, however, are learned through direct, hands-on experience undefined i.e.,“It's just like riding a bike.” We are NOT going to ride any bicycles in the GAO facility. But if it's been awhile since you've played with a hula hoop, a stick, or a rope; then this workshop is for you.

Attend this session and you'll learn (or re-learn) why recess and gym were your favorite classes in school. And if they were NOT your favorites, learn why so many others enjoyed playing games and participating in purposeful group activities.

This is a day full of experiential learning. At least six, hands-on, totally interactive exercises will be presented
to those who participant. Along the way, we will explore the following:

  • Trust and team dynamics - How to recognize early signs of distrust or team dysfunction
  • Communication - How to encourage the exchange of “know how” and start communication on a basis of agreement
  • Collaboration and problem-solving - How to encourage innovation while testing the viability of Plan A and Plan B
  • Leadership - How to support situational leadership in any group
  • Decision-making and role clarity - Experiment with a range of roles for both leaders and followers
  • Strengths capitalization for innovation and change - Learn to focus and build on the positive traits within any group or team
  • Knowledge management and organizational efficiency - Learn to quickly inventory the knowledge and skills of your team or group to quickly reach consensus and success.

We will work with three props / pieces of equipment:

  • Sticks
  • Hoops, and
  • Ropes

Such equipment is light-weight, portable, and accessible at most hardware stores. After this workshop, participants should be able to integrate these activities into their practice as energizers and/or icebreakers “with a purpose”.
