Addressing and Embracing Conflict

Many perceive conflict in the workplace, home or community as uncomfortable, scary or dangerous. They may seek to avoid conflict and calm people down without addressing the fundamental human needs underlying the conflict.

In this workshop you will learn theory and specific practices to identify and address the important unmet needs in conflict situations. You will develop skills that illuminate the misunderstandings and different experiences and perceptions at the heart of conflict. You will increase your ability to facilitate the growth of mutual understanding and the creation of solutions that address the needs and concerns of all.

Some specific skills that participants will be learning are:

• Identifying the probable needs underlying a specific behavior or statement.
• Identifying their own needs in reaction to different stimuli.
• Identifying their own feelings and judgments in a specific situation.
• Formulating several doable requests to address a need that they have.
• Empathizing with people whom they do not agree with.

About Jane Connor, Ph.D.

Jane Connor, Ph.D. is a certified trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication. She has shared Nonviolent Communication^sm and other conflict resolution processes in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Australia and North America. She is co-author of the book Connecting across Differences: How to Connect with Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime. She has facilitated the resolution of conflict in schools, homes, workplaces and communities for 15 years. Currently, she is a sub-contractor for Restorative DC, a non-profit under contract with the DC Public Schools to bring Restorative Justice, an alternative to traditional, punishment-only approaches to conflict and discipline problems, to DC schools.
